Not long after Tom and I finished our North Caicos house, we bought and shipped down a boat. It was a cute little Boston Whaler getaround, just enough to get us to and from Provo back in those days when the options were few for bringing back larger and non-flyable items from the "big city."
We quickly learned that we're not Boat People. It was all so complicated! I'm a simpler-is-better kinda girl - grab a bag and go. Even just getting the Lillie G into the water took a plan and lots of time. We went ahead and sold her several years ago, without regrets.
But now and then, the boat lure returns. Right now I am sitting on Branford Gardiner's "My Girl," escaping the sun and waiting for his 3 p.m. trip back to North. He's playing soft oldies similar to the song that named his boat. The canvas top and plastic rain flaps are making small slapping sounds. I am rocked by the gentle wake from other boats as they approach Walkin Marina. There's a Presidente beer on the bench seat beside me. Life is good, even though I've dropped some big bucks today, what with the rides, the purchases and lunch. I don't think I'll ever want to buy a boat again, but yeah, this is nice. Sing it, my men Willie and Placido.
